From Thursday July 28 to Sat July 30 Mine2Yours Consignment, a local business held a quarterly sale at the Coffee County/New Brockton Farm Center. At the end of the sale HAND UP was invited to collect the majority of the unsold clothing as a donation to our at-need families and elderly as well as for our local community agencies that also serve. In preparation for distribution we washed, sorted, sized and neatly folded all the clothing and sneakers.
WEPS (Women's Emergency Pregnancy Services) received 140 pieces of maternity clothing and 245 pieces of infant clothing and supplies. The Enterprise Nursing home and Bishop James Church received 516 pieces for the elderly. We distributed bulk children, elderly and adult clothing to the Nell Court section eight housing district. In addition to the gently used clothes new clothing was purchased by the members of HAND UP for the "Back to School" cases we sponsored.
In total we distributed 2000+ pieces of gently used and new clothing & sneakers! Our members also fulfilled 2016 back to school supply needs for at need families registered at the Coffee County Family Services office. Our members donated approximately $500 worth of school supplies.
On Saturday August 6, HAND UP was invited by the Adam's Court residents in Enterprise to attend a "meet and greet" resident sponsored bar-be-que. Hand Up prepared half pans of cole slaw, baked sweet potatoes and fried corn. Three gallons of iced tea and juice were passed out to the children. It was a fantastic opportunity for our organization to meet and answer questions about what we do.
On Saturday, September 24 HAND UP participated in the yearly community sponsored event, "Girls Night Out". We were situated in front of Second Hand Treasures, Antiques & More, 220 South Main St., Enterprise. Our hosting table was dressed in pink (for breast cancer awareness) and our traditional lime green. We provided courtesy pesto, crunchy bread medallions and sold bottled water, HANDY micro mitts, HAND shaped shortbread cookies and leather band jewelry. The event ran from 4pm until 9 pm. We were pleased to be able to answer questions about our organization. We were well received and enlisted four additional members that day. From the sale of goods and cash donations $196 was netted.
In the days following Thanksgiving 2016 HUE volunteers prepared an abundance of holiday side dishes to accompany the full smoked Turkey or Ham distributed to at-need families. The DIXON family, owners of ENTERPRISE SIGNZ volunteered their time and large BBQ smoker to cook all the meat so it was delivered piping hot! Along with the Thanksgiving dinner we provided each family with a loaf of bread, mustard and mayo to make sandwiches for the following days. We also provided a freshly prepared dried soup mix to be added to the balance of the turkey carcass to make a large vat of nutritious soup. Our approach was not to feed a plateful each for a family but to feed the family for a week. In total we fed an astounding number, 368 individuals!
Christmas 2016 we worked alongside Coffee County Family Services to provide 55 children with new clothing/sneakers and modest presents for the holiday. Our mission was to insure the children had at least 3 sets of new clothes, sneakers and warm winter clothing. Many members were extremely generous in their gift giving.
At the close of 2016 Hand Up Enterprise had been in organization since May 23. During that short period of time 713 individuals were fed. 423 non food items were distributed. Over 1220 pieces of clothing were distributed (NOT including the Christmas gifts) for specific at-need cases and 1900 pieces of clothing were distributed for Back to School, the elderly and WEPS.
