Stripping away the Shame of Hunger

intro by Jennifer Nichols

The moral test of a government is how it treats those who are at the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the aged; and those who are in the shadow of life, the sick and the needy, and the handicapped.~ Hubert Humphrey

Hand Up rises to the occasion of every case we are referred.  If it means spending our holiday at the site of a multi-family fire - bringing food to a homeless settler or transient or providing  personal essentials to our elderly  - we do what is necessary.  We work diligently in the shadows to strip away the shame of asking for help, especially food,  when hungry.

National statistics report that one out of every four children go to bed hungry.  This is not acceptable.  Until you are that child who is hungry or the parent or the grandparent who is "food insecure" you cannot relate to the hopelessness.

We do not interrogate the people we provide food to.  That is because we go to their homes to deliver groceries and see first hand their economic conditions.

Once you witness a child hugging a box of cereal as if it was a treasured toy you will never forget.  Once you hug an elderly shut-in who doesn't want to let you go you will never forget.

Serving our community is our privilege.  Feeding the hungry is our responsibility.  Paying it forward is what we do.

 Thank you kindly,

Jennifer Nichols
